Over 4 000 new voters in Umvoti

WITH the build-up to the local government elections on 3 August, 58 357 voters out of a potential 80 000 are now registered on the Umvoti voter's roll and will make their mark in one of the 14 Umvoti wards.

In a report to the Greytown Gazette IEC Greytown manager Chris Naidoo said that a total of 2 545 new voters had registered over the weekend of 9 and 10 April - altogether 8 000 individuals had visited the 90 voting stations in Umvoti.

At the previous voter's registration weekend in March, 2 000 new voters had been registered.

So altogether the two weekends have generated 4 545 new voters. For the time would-be voters can still register at the IEC offices.

The bulk of registered voters visited their voting stations to verify addresses because of receiving a text from IEC to the effect that there was a potential address problem.

The question of voter's addresses has come to the fore through the Constitutional Court last year declaring that the 2013 Tlokwe by-elections had not been free and fair in that all new voters registered had to have address details.

In February the Electoral Court again halted these by-elections in view of missing addresses of over 4 000 voters.

In May the Con Court will rule on the requirement of voter's addresses on the voter's roll.

A number of political parties are very active in Umvoti - not only in the 14 wards, but also making considerable use of social media.
