Papwa Sewgolum Golf Day

2018-05-23 06:00

THERE is a golf tournament being organised for the late Papwa Sewgolum, which will be held at Durban Country Club on July 22, 2018.

The Heritage Centre is also asking for newspaper cuttings or memorabilia that can be displayed in an exhibition.

Sewgolum won the Natal Open at the Durban Country Club and, due to the laws of that era, was forced to accept his trophy outside the clubhouse.

He could not further his illustrious career internationally.

Sewgolum is a legend who commanded respect in this country and had a peculiar way of hitting the golf ball with his left hand.

He once played at the Greytown Country Club in the 60s.

One Mr Churchill “Shakes” Maphanga was one of the caddies who was at that tournament. He clearly remembers the sheer professionalism and precision shown by Sewgolum on that day.

He mentions some of the players from Greytown who participated in that tournament.

It would be interesting to read some stories from our own stalwarts.

Mr Selvan Naidoo is one of the organisers and his e-mail address is SNAIDOO@nwood.co.za for more information.
