RESIDENTS in Sargeant Street in Greytown are calling on authorities in uMvoti Municipality to repair the huge potholes damaging the tyres of their vehicles.

When the Gazette visited the area on Tuesday morning, motorists were seen driving on the verge of the road to avoid the potholes.

Resident Willie Reineke (79) said the ratepayers in Sargeant Street have sent numerous complaints to the ward councillors but all attempts to resolve the issue were unsuccessful.

“I reported the matter at the municipality some time ago. I was told that the municipality does not have the money to repair potholes on our street.

“Our street has never been repaired for the past 10 years. Sargeant Street alone has more than 17 potholes.

“When I drive on the road, I have to drive on the verge of the road to avoid huge potholes.

“We pay our taxes and rates every month. Where is our money going? If these potholes were in the mayor’s street, they would have been fixed up by now. We complain to the authorities, but nothing is done about it,” Reineke said.

Another resident said she has been living in the area for more than 10 years and potholes on Sargeant Street have never been fixed.

Ward councillor Wilson Khoza said uMvoti Municipality has dispatched a team to repair potholes in Greytown.

“We have a team working at Ghost Town coming up to Sargeant Street.

“At the moment we are facing a huge challenge due to the bursting of water pipes in Greytown. The team will most definitely [attend] to the complaints raised by residents from Sargeant Street.”
