Pretty pots and sensational succulents

2017-05-17 06:00

THE topics of creating your own plant containers together with a sensational range of succulents proved to be a very popular drawcard attracting an excellent turnout of Greytown Garden club members and guests at the meeting held last Tuesday.

Speakers Taru Thomas demonstrated the fascinating technique of Hypertufa, and Colette Norris, from Leckhampton Succulents, shared her passion for these often misunderstood plants.

With the constant predictions that increasing heat and drought are going to become more prevalent weather patterns, succulents are becoming increasingly sought after as many plants requiring more temperate conditions cannot survive in the unpredictable climatic extremes.

Drawing from her extensive knowledge of these “Cinderellas” of the plant kingdom Collette helped clarify the numerous misperceptions and fallacies surrounding succulents.
Those present learnt that not all succulents are aloes or cacti – neither are all indigenous, nor required extreme heat to survive.
They have varied growing requirements and offer the gardener a breathtaking range of colours, shapes and textures.

For those who would like to combine their newfound knowledge by creating a Hypertufa container and filling it with succulents, the Country Nursery has the ingredients and a range of succulents suited to the district.
