“OVER the years, I have come to understand what it means to be part of a close-knit community. Part of making a place feel like home depends on what you put into it and what it reciprocates.”These were the words of the beloved principal of Greytown Secondary School, K. Maharaj, who will retire on January 31. After 38 years of service and dedication to the school, Maharaj decided to hang up his gloves and retire. “It has been a true honour to serve Greytown and Greytown Secondary School. Thirty eight years have elapsed in a flash because it was my pleasure to work alongside the very best pupils, staff and parents. “The community of Greytown has being unwavering in their support of me and for this I am truly grateful. “I consider myself extremely fortunate to have served the same community I grew up in and grew to love. A community that has been my home from the day I was born. “I will miss Greytown dearly. Like all the other Greytownians that feel that sense of belonging when they visit Greytown, I too will be navigating back periodically to enjoy the comfort and serenity only Greytown can bring. The advantage of being part of such a small community is that your successes are celebrated and your problems are shared,” Maharaj said.Maharaj thanked all the families, friends, businesses and staff, past and present, that have relentlessly supported and continue to support the school. “I am going to surely and sorely miss the school. Yes, I will miss my job, however I will also miss the incredible people I have had the pleasure of working with throughout these 38 years. I cannot thank you enough for all the opportunities and experiences you have given me during my time at Greytown Secondary School. “Once again, thank you so much for the opportunity to be part of this great community. I do hope we stay in touch. “I am leaving content, knowing that Greytown Secondary School is a great school in the capable hands of a dedicated staff that will continue to provide the best quality education to the community of Greytown.“Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that’s how I will remember you. If you remember me in sadness and tears, then don’t remember me at all. Nothing lasts forever. Forever is a lie,” he added.
