Protect, do not abuse

2018-03-07 06:01

DEAR Sir,

I am a man in prison. I have learnt from my mistakes which I have made in the past. Taking another person’s life was not the right solution to my problems. Growing up, I made a lot of mistakes, but the worst was quitting school — I thought I was clever at the time. I did no see I was being a fool.

As from today, I have learnt that abuse breaks the soul more than the body. I have learnt that anger, lust and greed are the main causes of all suffering.

Anger makes everyone its slave and destroys friendships, no matter how close.

As a man I am responsible for my behaviour, and I need help, and aggression is not an accepted solution to my problems, nor are alcohol and drugs.

I am in control of the choices I make in life ... wrong or right.

I cannot do anything about what has happened in the past, but I can change the future.

Abusing a woman or child does not make me a real man. South Africa needs men who protect women and children and the community at large.

To say “sorry” sometimes is the hardest word to use but it is essential to have the ability to apologise to your spouse and accept responsibility in order to have a healthy relationship.

As a man I have learnt to forgive and let go.

We must help our children to grow up into responsible adults with integrity.

As a man I was not born to abuse, but to protect and provide for my family.
