Puppy love

HAVING made the decision to bring puppy into your life, Greytown dog expert Benda Munitich advises this week on what to do when fetching your puppy

A puppy is generally ready to leave its mother between six and eight weeks of age.

• Find out what food the puppy has been accustomed to and ensure that it has had its first inoculation.

• Take any records with you and ask the breeder to supply a little of the food it has been eating.

• If you are on your own take a crate along to contain the puppy while travelling.

Otherwise it can be held on someone's lap.

• From the time the puppy arrives at your home it must start learning.

• Be familiar with how a dog thinks. He is now part of a pack - there are top dogs, middle dogs, and bottom dogs. you are the pack leader in the puppy's eyes.

• You must behave as the pack leader. The puppy will not just pick up your rules. As with a child he needs to learn from infancy.

• You are the leader. First decide what your rules are and make sure that everybody else who has anything to do with the puppy also knows what your rules are.

• These rules must then be communicated to the puppy.

• If you do this successfully you will have a happy member of your family pack and you will be established as the pack leader.

• Obviously the puppy will not regard your four or five-year-old as the pack leader, but the child will have some control over him, especially if the rules are made clear.

• The puppy wants and needs a leader as dogs are, by and large, dependant creatures.

• Teaching good habits from the time he gets home is the start of teaching him to be a good citizen.
