Puppy love

FEEDINGS times for a puppy are very important says Greytown dog expert Brenda Muntiich who advises:

A puppy will generally fill its stomach about four times a day, and will empty it twice as often. Feeding times are very important and are an occasion for a little training.

• Rattle the dish and call the puppy by his name.

• He will be keen to come. Most puppies are greedy.

• Later this command can be changed to “come”.

• Make sure that the puppy is getting all the nutrients in the right quantities.

• There are completely balanced puppy foods on the market and these are good to use.

• Remember that it is difficult to reverse problems associated with mal nourishment when the dog is older, so rather start with a good diet.

• Always have a supply of clean, fresh water available.

• An excess of milk may cause diarrhoea.

Your puppy needs plenty of exercise - of the right kind. He also needs socialising, getting used to noises of various kinds including traffic noises , and meeting new people. If you live in a town where puppy classes are held then do go because the puppy is most receptive between the age of six weeks and eight months. Classes will enable your puppy to learn new skills and participate in a variety of activities. He will learn to interact with other dogs, learn tolerance and you the owner will be educated in canine behaviour. The bond between you and your puppy will improve.

• Prevention is always better than cure.

• The puppy should have had his first inoculation before you bring him home.

• Consult your veterinarian on when to get the shots and take your puppy for a check-up when he first comes home.

• De-worming must be done on a regular basis.
