AS the Craigieburn pipeline becomes a reality (early next year) after three years of “fairy stories” from the powers that be, a gang of thieves decided to intervene and stole an earthmoving Traxcavator Caterpillar from just off the Greytown-Mooi River road intersection alongside the pipeline on Friday night.

Contractors Cerimele Mantombana Joint Venture, who have been mainly responsible for the rapid and actual completion of the pipeline, have offered a R20 000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the machine.

The night watchman on duty was accosted by four armed men who bundled him into the boot of one of their vehicles. The gang, who appear to have been extremely well organised, apparently then loaded the 10-ton or so machine onto a low-bed truck using the ramps, and drove off.

The night watchman was kept in the boot, but was released unharmed at Mispah, and immediately raised the alarm while the stolen machine disappeared to a site unknown.

Otto Zimmerman of Cerimele Mantombana JV told the Greytown Gazette the Greytown SAPS and Field Security were investigating the theft.

Anyone who might have witnessed anything on Friday night in the area is asked to please contact the investigating units.

The R20 000 reward is for information which leads to the recovery of the machine.
