CONSTRUCTION will soon start on the much-awaited bridge over the Tugela River to connect communities in Msinga and Nkandla. MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has announced the construction of the R53 million Khomfini-Tugela River Bridge, which will give a lifeline to the people of the two areas, who are forced to travel more than two hours to connect with one another.

This life-changing structure will be constructed over 18 months and will create more than 30 direct job opportunities for local people and improve the socioeconomic outlook of these rural communities.

KZN Department of Transport has earmarked an investment of more than R1 billion to fast-track development of road infrastructure and create mobility in the uThungulu and Umzinyathi areas.

Addressing more than 3 000 community members during the official handover of the contractor, Mchunu was unapologetic in reaffirming the government's commitment to developing rural communities.

He also expressed satisfaction that through the Department of Transport, the province was moving fast to achieve the provincial growth and development plan, which, among others, emphasises the need for connecting small towns and rural communities to major corridors and upscale their participation in the mainstream economy.

Mega roads and bridge projects that have been completed in the two municipalities include:

• construction of P15 in Kranskop at a cost of R313 million;

. main road P50 in Nkandla at a cost of R308.4 million;

. Nsuze River Bridge at a cost of R3.5 million; and

. main road P496 at a cost of R1.1 billion.

As well, among key projects which are currently under construction in uMsinga is the P16, which is more than 80 kilometres long, at a cost of R3 billion
