Rabies alert in district

2017-11-29 06:00

TWO positive cases of rabies have now been reported in the district in the past week - the animal in question was sent to the Allerton Laboratories and tested positive for rabies.

An appeal to the public - if they see a wild or domestic animal acting strangely to contact the local veterinarian or State Vet so that the necessary steps can be taken. Do not try to make contact with the suspicious animal – it is vital that such animals are tested so that surrounding animals can be vaccinated immediately and in-contact humans can be treated.

If the suspicious animal has been killed do not bury it without having it tested.

These animals can run for kilometres and other animals and people may have interacted with it and a necessary investigation needs to take place to prevent further spread of the disease and possible loss of life.

Animals should have an initial two rabies vaccinations within a year. If your dog has not had adequate vaccinations and is bitten by a rabid animal it poses a real risk to the owners, and according to recommendations from the State Vet office, must be euthanised.

If your dog has had adequate vaccinations and comes into contact with a rabid animal the rabies vaccination must be boosted immediately

In response to these cases on Friday December 1 Umvoti Animal Hospital at 220 Durban Street is offering rabies vaccinations at reduced rates in order to encourage the community to start or boost their current rabies vaccination programme.
