TO help counter the rabies outbreak in the district, over 200 dogs were vaccinated last week through a team effort co-ordinated by Umvoti Animal Hospital, Umvoti Agricultural Society, the State Vet and the Department of Agriculture.

Two hundred and eighteen dogs and 11 cats were vaccinated in the Muden Road, Rietvlei Road, Mispah, Pietermaritzburg Road and Seven Oaks areas over three days last week.

This preventative action continues this week on Wednesday and Thursday, along the Dundee Road and Ahrens Road to Kranskop. Four cases of animal rabies have been confirmed in the Umvoti area since the beginning of the year and several more in areas surrounding Umvoti.

It is a legal responsibility of all pet owners to ensure that their dogs and cats are up to date with their rabies vaccinations. Umvoti Animal Hospital will be carrying out vaccinations on March 16 from 8.30 am to 1 pm at cost of R50 per vaccination. Pet owners will also have their animals’ cards stamped.

The animals can remain in their owner’s vehicle while the vets vaccinate the animal.

There have been five confirmed human deaths from rabies in SA since December 2017, two of which were in KZN.

Greytown Hospital has the anti-rabies vaccine should a human be exposed to an animal that has been positively confirmed as having rabies.

If your pets are not vaccinated please get it done. It is not worth taking a chance, as should your animals get rabies they will die, as will an untreated human bitten by a rabid animal.

By law, should an unvaccinated domestic pet bite a human, the pet will have to be euthanised.
