JUST three millimetres rain recorded in Greytown last week. Now if this rain had been recorded on Saint Swithin’s Day, 15 July, legend would have it that the wet weather would continue for 40 days and 40 nights, but no such luck.

Saint Swithin was an Anglo Saxon bishop in Winchester who died in 862. At his request he was buried outside, but nearly 100 years later his remains were transferred to a shrine inside the cathedral.
Legend has it that the reburial of Swithin was accompanied by violent storms lasting 40 days and 40 nights because of his outrage at being moved.

Less dramatic predictions
of rain:

• Evening red and morning grey will set the traveller on his way. But evening grey and morning red will bring down rain upon his head.

• No dew on the grass at night is a sign of rain.

• It is said that flies bite more when it is going to rain

• When chairs squeak, of rain they speak.

• Spiders leave their webs when it is going to rain.

• A ring around the sun or moon means rain or snow coming soon.

• If salt is sticky and gains in weight, it will rain before too late.

• Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s take warning.

• The aching of a broken bone predicts rain.

• When the cows are lying on the ground, the rain shall soon be coming down.

“When the wind
is in the east,
It’s good for
neither man
nor beast.
When the wind is in the north,
The old folk should not
venture forth.
When the wind is in the south,
It blows the bait in the
fishes’ mouth.
When the wind is in the west,
It is of all the winds the best.”
