Raising awareness on firearm amnesty

2020-01-15 06:00

A SOUTH African Police Services (SAPS) station commander, Brigadier Boxer Pillay, would like to sensitise members of the community regarding the firearm amnesty period that was declared by The minister of police, General Bheki Cele.

The period, which commenced on December 1, will end on May 31.

According to Pillay, firearm amnesty is an indemnity against prosecution for the unlawful possession of a firearm or ammunition.

“Firearms that people unlawfully have in their possession, unwanted firearms, unregistered firearms, firearm parts and ammunition may be surrendered during the amnesty period,” said Pillay, adding that persons or institutions that meet the criteria below can apply for amnesty:

• Persons in possession of a firearm without a legitimate licence, permit or authorisation.

• Persons in possession of a firearm part without a licensed firearm capable of bearing that part.

• Persons in possession of ammunition without a licensed firearm capable of discharging the ammunition or without a collector’s permit.

• Persons in possession of illegally imported firearms.

• Persons who inherited firearms but failed to obtain a licence, permit or authorisation for such firearms.

• Persons who have been declared unfit to possess a firearm, but failed to surrender their firearms and ammunition.

• Businesses [including private security] with firearms and ammunition that ceased to carry on business and failed to dispose of the firearms and ammunition.

• Persons in possession of firearms of which the firearm licence, permit or authorisation has been terminated in terms of the Act.

• Institutions that wish to surrender obsolete, redundant or discarded firearms.

- Persons who wish to voluntary surrender their illegally possessed firearms or ammunition may do so at any time during and after the amnesty.
