A 23-YEAR-OLD man, Hlangasani Nxumalo, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Greytown Regional Court last week for the rape of a teenager earlier this year.On March 28, the 13-year-old was at home in the Hholwane area, Msinga, with her sisters and grandmother. The accused, who was their neighbour, requested the assistance of the family to search for his wife, who had gone missing during the day. The three girls went with Nxumalo into the fields to search — the teenager got separated from her sisters and was left with the accused. He cut a stick from the field and threatened to assault her while telling her to get undressed. She refused and the accused continued to threaten her, then pushed her against a rock and raped her.The victim reported the matter to her sisters and thereafter the police — she was taken for medical examination and counselling. Nxumalo was arrested and appeared before court where his request for bail was denied. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment on September 20 in the Greytown Regional Court.
