Rapists sentenced to life

2017-05-31 06:02

TWO rapists were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Greytown Regional Court last week.
In the first case, 31-year-old Cebisi Mnomiya was drinking in a tavern in the Ntembisweni area.

It is alleged that he and the victim, a 27-year-old female, knew each other and he invited her to his room, promising more drinks, then assaulted and raped her.

Mnomiya was arrested and granted bail by the court in October 2016. He appeared before the regional magistrate on 25 May and was found guilty and sentenced to life.

Imprisonment for life was also imposed on 22-year-old Mhlawumbe Innocent Ndlovu who was found guilty of rape, kidnapping and attempted murder.

On 11 February 2011, the victim, a teenage girl, was walking home from school in the Ntunjambili area when Ndlovu grabbed her and said he needed to talk to her.

He was her former boyfriend with whom she had a child. The accused tied the victim to a tree, gagged her and raped her.

Ndlovu then went off to fetch food and a blanket and on his return raped her again. The following morning he raped and stabbed her.

In the third case a 14-year-old girl’s uncle, 24-year-old Gumede Siphesihle, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting the teenager.

On 17 March the victim alleged that when she was sleeping the accused crept into the room and she awoke to find him on top of her. She stated that with the moonlight shining into the room she recognised her uncle. He initially denied the incident, but then pleaded guilty.
