Register as a voter this weekend

2016-03-02 06:00

CURRENTLY there are 53 643 voters registered in Umvoti's 11 wards, but following this weekend's voter registration the total could increase to an estimated 65 000 with the addition of three new wards - two in Msinga and one in Mooi River.

Although a date has not yet been announced for this year's local government elections, which have to be held by August, there is already lots of interest and activity by political parties, which will be putting up candidates. According to the statistics given to the Greytown Gazette by Chris Naidoo of Greytown IEC, Umvoti population is 104 000 with nearly half registered as voters in the 2011 elections. He expects that with the additional three wards this total will increase with 3 000 or so in the new two Msinga wards and 1 500 or so in the Mooi River ward.

Although 16 year olds can register, you have to be 18 to vote. To register where you live, a valid South African ID (green bar- coded ID, smart ID or temporary ID certificate) is required. To find out which is your voting station check the voting station finder app at or call 0800 11 8000, or dial *120*IEC#(*120*432#).

If you are already registered SMS your ID mumber to 32810 to confirm and to receive a reminder of where your voting station is (SMS - R1), check on elect or call 0800 11 8000. If your voting district has changed through demarcation you should receive a notice from the IEC

Theme for the registrations is "My tomorrow is in my hands" - local government elections are important to all so make every effort to register this weekend or check whether you are on the certified voters' roll to be able to have a say in your future.
