Renewal of firearm licences and competency certificates

2017-04-26 06:02

FIREARM owners must renew their licences 90 days before expiry date or face prosecution.

In terms of Section 24(1) of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (60 of 2000) the holder of a licence who wishes to renew the licence must apply to do so at least 90 days before the expiry of the licence.
The 90 working days time frame is to allow applications to be finalised from the time the application was handed to the SAPS until finalised at the Central Firearms Register.
Licences for which renewal applications have been lodged, will remain valid until the application for renewal has been decided upon.

Owners are urged to check the validity dates on the licence cards. If the licence has expired firearm owners are not permitted to renew the licence.
Firearms affected may be voluntarily surrendered at the local police station in order to avoid prosecution for being in possession of an unlicenced firearm.

Those who voluntarily surrender their firearm will not be prosecuted for being in possession of an unlicenced firearm.
