Rental Housing Tribunal information

2017-06-28 06:00

THE Rental Housing Tribunal is an independent body established to resolve disputes between tenants and landlords arising out of unfair practice in residential dwellings (houses, backyard rooms, hostels, shacks, flats, etc.) throughout KZN.

Unfair practice relates to any conduct violating the rights or interest of tenants and landlords such as illegal evictions and/or notice to vacate, maintenance, non-payment of rentals, overcrowding, nuisance and health matters that may pollute the environment in the residential dwellings.

Tenants and landlords are encouraged to use the services of Rental Housing Tribunal by lodging complaints with the tribunal for their disputes to be resolved.

The majority of people are not aware of the existence and services of the Rental Housing Tribunal as well as the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords.

It is responsible to assist and provide information to landlords and tenants with regards to the Rental Housing Act as amended.

The ruling made by the Rental Housing Tribunal is the same as the order taken at the magistrate court. All services of the tribunal are free.
