A FULL-SCALE road safety campaign was launched by KZN MEC Themba Mthembu last week to end the scourge of road accidents in KZN.

Accompanied by KZN transport department head, Sbubiso Gumbi and Umvoti dDputy Mayor Nomvula Masikane “Operation Siyalola” began with a visit to the Matimatolo Police Station where a number of challenges were noted. Then on to the Ikusasa Labantwana vegetable garden project to hand over water cans and fertiliser.

Next was an inspection of the upgrade of main road P17 between Greytown and Ngebevu, which will allow easier access to Greytown with the upgrade of the 53km from gravel to black tar. This was a provincial intervention that had been a major boost to hospital facilities, clinics and schools within Nadi.

Transport’s Mr Gumbi said the upgrade was part of the radical economic transformation and Grade 1, 2 and 3 contractors and local communities had benefitted by R171 000 000.

The delegation held a multidisciplinary road block on the Kranskop road handing out road safety material - 132 vehicles were stopped, 21 were given written notices and there were 33 charges.

Then back in Greytown a visit was paid to the Greytown Taxi Rank to talk about road safety and hand out road- safety pamphlets.
