THE Elite Athlete Development Programme (EADP) works with athletes, coaches and medical staff to make sport-specific packages for individual athletes.Sarah Barber was selected for the programme after winning a silver medal in the heptathlon during the South African Athletics Championships. The championships took place in Germiston at the end of April. Sarah trained twice a week for the championships with private athletic coach Chris White in Pietermaritzburg. The heptathlon is a two-day event, during which the participants must complete the 100 m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 m sprint on day one, as well as long jump, javelin and 800 m on day two. This event requires disciplined training and Sarah’s weekly training is rigorous, involving time trials, fitness training and gym workouts. She entered into this sport because she wants to become a top athlete. When I asked Sarah if she saw herself as a Wembley leader, she said: “Leadership is about leading from the front and setting a good example.” Sarah has proved herself in many areas of sport. She perseveres in all her endeavours on the sport field. Wembley is truly proud of her and her latest achievement on the athletics field. — Supplied.
