THE staff, school governing body, parents and pupils of Greytown Junior School honoured Mr SJ Nel at a farewell function held in the school hall on April 12.

After 40 years of service, Nel left the profession as a retired principal on March 31.

Born in Durban, Nel served in the South African Navy before earning his teaching degree at the Durban Teacher’s College.

He took up his first teaching position in 1978 at Kuswag High School in Amanzimtoti before moving on to Bergville Junior School to teach for four years from 1989.

In 1993 he was promoted to head of department (senior primary) at Greytown Junior School, where he taught Afrikaans and history. He was promoted to principal in 1997.

We would like to thank Mr Nel for his dedication and service to our school for the past 26 years. He will be remembered for always being astute, thorough, driven and compassionate. He was so much more than just a principal: he was a teacher, father figure and friend. We wish you God’s richest blessings in this new phase of your life.

Greytown Junior School would like to thank all the Department of Education officials, business houses, governing body, staff, pupils, parents, well-wishers, former pupils, parents of former pupils, past governing body and the community for their contributions in making this function a success. — Supplied.
