Louise Yeadon "A ROOM with a View", was written by EM Foster in 1908 to highlight restrictive and repressive Edwardian England values in contrast to unconventional, modern norms of Italy. The title of Foster's novel has inspired a new vision for Wembley College, which is a school with a view. Many conversations take place on the top, school fields and they go something like this: "Wow, I have never seen such an amazing view at a school." The physical view from the school is breathtaking. The significance of this title highlights the ethos and physical beauty of the school. Wembley is part of a new landscape of schools in South Africa. We are a young, niche school with a modern approach to schooling. Wembley is looking forward to a great future in global education. The Cambridge system focuses on modernity and excellence. Our education system in South Africa has traditionally been based on an industrial model of schooling which produces workers for industries. The more modern approach to education is an agricultural model in which pupils celebrate their individuality. Our pupils are unique and different following their passions.Foster's A Room with a View looks at tensions between old ways of thinking in contrast to new ways of living. Wembley is a country school which values new ways of learning and doing in a beautiful, pastoral setting. What will education look like in the future? Curricula may change to create problem solving based curricula where students engage knowledge to match pupil strengths and interests. In a modern classroom the role of the teacher will change, "replacing the sage on the stage with the guide on the side." Wembley will keep up with modern treads and technological advancements.Luckily school is not all about learning, but also about life skills on and off sports fields. Hopefully this will never be overtaken by the digital age and the hockey astro, tennis courts, soccer, rugby fields and swimming pool continue to play a major role in pupils’ lives. Whatever the future holds we will all be a part of it and Wembley pupils as future leaders will be part of shaping the future with their view of life. Go forth and be global visionaries - our planet needs you.(An adaptation from Michael Yeadon's address at the Wembley 20 year assembly).
