Second Friday the 13th this year

2018-07-11 06:01

FOR the second time this year, paraskevidekatriaphobics or friggatriskaidaphobics have to face a Friday the 13th — the previous one was 13 weeks ago, in April.

Whether you are superstitious or not, here are some explanations of common superstitions to help ease your mind this Friday the 13th.

• Seven years’ bad luck if you break a mirror — in ancient times it was said that a mirror had the power to confiscate part of the user’s soul. If the mirror was broken, the person’s soul would be trapped inside.

• Tossing a pinch of spilled salt over your left shoulder — originating from the legend that the devil is always standing behind you, throwing salt in his eye is said to distract him from causing trouble.

• The phrase “bless you” originated from the erroneous belief that the soul escapes the body during a sneeze.

• Horseshoes bring good luck — it was believed that witches rode on broomsticks because they were afraid of horses, so a horseshoe was a good charm to scare them off.
