Second teen sentenced for Seven Oaks murder

TWO teens have now been sentenced for the murder of the Mondi employee, Sarel Theron, in Seven Oaks on July 4, 2016.

Earlier this year, Nthutuko Mshibe was sentenced to an effective 22 years, the Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Koen said that as Msibe had taken part in the murder before he turned 18 this had saved him from a minimum life sentence.

Last week a second teen, Siphesihle Cele, who had pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 20 years for murder, 12 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years for housebreaking - the sentences are to run concurrently.

That day three youths broke into Theron’s house on Mistley Estate, stabbed, assaulted and then strangled him and fled with a cellphone and other items.

Two of the three teens were arrested shortly after the murder in a joint police and security firms operation – the third teen has still not been found.

The two accused claim they had gone to the house with the intention of robbery and that the third missing member of the gang had stabbed Theron, who had fallen to the ground, and had then strangled him.
