Senior cop charged for defeating the ends of justice

A SENIOR police officer working for the Greytown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice after he allegedly solicited bribes from suspects.

The suspect, whose name cannot been released until he pleads in court, was arrested on numerous allegations relating to corruption and fraud. It is alleged that when the accused was investigating rape and sexual assault cases, he would approach the family of suspects he was investigating and demand a bribe in order to drop the charges.

In a recent incident, the accused, who is a warrant officer from the unit, allegedly solicited a bribe from a suspect and gave it to the victim’s father with the intention of silencing the victim.

The Gazette established that the accused’s role was to quash the charge to ensure that the docket didn’t go to court to undergo prosecution purposes.

A statement obtained from court reads: “The accused did wrongfully and intentionally perform the following acts: take money from an accused person and gave it to the victim’s father. The case was [dropped] without the complainant’s knowledge.”

The Gazette is in possession of the statements made by the victims and suspects’families accusing the suspect [the warrant officer] of demanding bribes from them before he could drop the charges.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said: “A 46-year-old suspect was arrested on November 5 by the police Anti-Corruption Unit and he appeared in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on the same day.

“He was granted bail and the case was remanded to November 26.”
