WHILE most sources quote the sapphire as the birthstone for September an American jeweller says there is a choice of seven - sapphire, Lapis Lazuli, Peridot, Sardoyxl, Zircon, Moonstone or Agate.

Sapphires are referred to as the “celestial” stone ranging in blues from cornflower to dark and inky.

It was the gem of Apollo, the Greek God of prophesy and worn by worshippers visiting his shrine in Delphi to seek help.
Said to represent purity of the soul, it was worn by priests as protection from impure thoughts and temptations of the flesh. Warriors presented their young wives with sapphire necklaces so they would remain faithful in the belief that the stone’s colour would darken if worn by an adulterer or adulteress.

Sapphires were once believed to be protection against snakes. It was said that if poisonous reptiles and spiders were placed in a jar containing the stone they would immediately die. The French of the 13th century believed that sapphire transformed stupidity to wisdom, and irritability to good temper.

Lapis Lazuli, also blue, is said to enhance awareness and creativity and is also known the stone of purity.

In ancient times Peridot was the traditional birthstone for September – green to yellow in colour it is believed to protect the wearer from negativity.
Sardonyx was the stone in the old Roman calendar – a variety of onyx with red bands of sand. The stone was said to enhance outage and so was worn by soldiers in ancient Rome.

Zircon - transparent stone of various colours often used as a diamond substitute, is the birthstone in the Hindu calendar. It is believed to bring prosperity and peace of mind.

Before the Zircon was identified, the moonstone was the September birthstone in the ancient Hindu calendar. Composed of alternate layers of orthoclase and albite which creates a glowing “from within” look, said to relieve anxiety for the wearer.
