SERIAL rapist, 39-year-old Mhlabuzima Goodnews Zondi, was sentenced to 12 life sentences and 77 years’ imprisonment in the Durban Regional Court on 19 April after being found guilty of 12 counts of rape, 11 counts of kidnapping as well as one count of theft and pointing of a firearm.
He was arrested by Greytown FCS after one of his victims saw him in Wimpy Greytown having lunch and alerted the police.

In March 2013, this victim, at the time 17 years old, was offered a lift by the accused as she was walking in Ngome. He drove her into the forest where he raped her, then left her on the roadside.

A case was opened at Greytown police station and the docket was transferred to Greytown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offences Unit for further investigation.
The accused appeared before the Greytown court and thereafter the case was transferred to Pietermaritzburg court, and he was finally sentenced at the Durban Regional Court.

During the investigation the accused was linked to another 11 rape cases through DNA and his modus operandi in the crime he committed between 2009 and 2013 in Greytown, Durban Central, New Hanover, Eshowe, Pietermaritzburg and Melmoth.
Zondi denied all 12 charges claiming the victims were his girlfriends and not victims of rape.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for each rape, five years for each kidnapping, 12 years for pointing with a firearm and five years for theft.
