THE newly-elected mayor of uMshwathi Municipality, Godfrey Zondi, promised residents that he would make service delivery a top priority in the municipality.

Zondi told the Gazette that the first Budget Road shows will be held this month to address the concerns of the residents.

“As much as we are a local municipality with financial constraints, we believe that service delivery to the residents should be a top priority.

“As the new mayor of this municipality, it is my duty to ensure that the issues raised at the Budget Road Shows are addressed.

“At the moment, water crisis in the areas under the uMshwathi jurisdiction present a challenge. We will contact uMgungundlovu District to supply our areas with clean water,” Zondi said.

Zondi was sworn in as the mayor on May 30. The election of Zondi comes after the passing away of former Mayor Siphindile Zondi-Mbhele in February.

UMshwathi Municipality communications manager Sibusiso Mkhithi said: “Zondi has extensive experience in local government, having served in various positions including being a general manager: Community Services and manager: Inter-Governmental Relations. On the political front, he is currently serving as ANC Coordinator of the Moses Mabida Regional team.

“This prestigious event was witnessed by all members of the executive committee, councillors, provincial leadership, Vuyiswa Caluza, leadership from the RTT, Thulani Xulu, IEC, members of the community and was officiated by local magistrate Mr Sibisi.”

In his acceptance speech, the new mayor committed himself to ensure continuation of a corruption free, sound and effective administration that puts the interest of the community at the heart of its existence.

“He further requested that all councillors join forces towards this drive to a better future.

“The new mayor was warmly received by all councillors,” Mkhithi added.
