THERE was so much excitement four years ago as then president, Jacob Zuma announced that millions and millions of rands would be spent on upgrading the notorious single lane bridge at Tugela Ferry.

The bridge, which had stood there to serve, over the years, millions of pedestrians, vehicles and animals.

The new 170 metre bridge would cost in the region of R55 million and open at the beginning of 2018.

Rewind two years to November 2016, considerable progress had been made on the new hi-tech structure — but then heavy rains brought the Tugela River down in flood and washed away the low lying structures which had been built.

Whilst the single span well-built steel bridge showed its superiority standing solidly as it had done for so many years.

Back to 2018, the new reinforced concrete bridge is completed.

But pedestrians, vehicles, tractors - you name it, are still using the original dangerous single lane structure, which by now should just be a pedestrian crossing.

The reason — there are apparently no funds to complete the access road to the new bridge — which stands complete in all its glory, but firmly fenced off from use.

Sound familiar? Bit similar to the Craigieburn pipe dream — so near but so far!
