RESIDENTS in Msinga took to the streets last week, blocking the road with burning tyres as they demanded better services. One of the protesters, who did not wish to be named, said: “The authorities in our area are not willing to listen to us when we ask them to supply the community with water. Sometimes we don’t have water for more than two weeks.”The protest continued for more than three days with residents continuing to block roads with burning tyres. Unconfirmed reports indicated that protesters were looting shops in the CBD. A video circulating on Facebook showed protesters looting a truck carrying Jojo tanks. Police could not confirm if any arrests have been made with regards the alleged looting.Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said six suspects were arrested during the protests.“The community of Msinga blocked both entrances from the village and CBD with big stones, trees and burned tyres on the road. “Six suspects aged between 22 and 40 were arrested for public violence and will appear in the court soon.”Attempts to get a comment from Msinga Municipality were unsuccessful at the time of going to print. A spokesperson for the municipality, Khethiwe Ziqubu, referred all questions to the Municipal Manager, Senzo Sokhela.
