Speaking about our municipalities with balance

2019-11-13 06:00

I WRITE this to combat a trend among many adults, that there’s nothing to be said about our municipalities but words of contempt. Yes, I could never be naive enough to think that there aren’t inefficiencies and “turning-a-blind-eye” favours that require weeding out, but we should also ask ourselves if we thank our localities for everything they get right as much as we’re so quick to point out with scorn the things they get wrong.

I always find it humorous when I approach people at these municipality counters. Often they’re already in that defensive stance before I’ve even said anything. It’s only when I offer them a smile and assure them that I’m not rushing them or believe I know their job better than they do that I get the service I hoped for. With such an approach, I’m often pleased and surprised by their fast and friendly response to my issues.

It’s human nature to focus on the problems instead of being thankful for what’s right. I stress again that I’m not calling for an overlook of things that require correction, just that we should also remind ourselves that the municipality is the reason we can have those relaxing showers in the morning, or a family meal at night with the lights on, which is far more the case than not.

Thinking back to that guy at the Traffic Department who was shouting at the easy-target lady for going on lunch when she had a queue in front of her, maybe we should realise it’s not her we should be taking our complaints and suggestions to, but instead speak to someone at the department who could actually make a difference.

Remember: emotions are contagious, and if we continue to only express disdain and not balance it out with gratitude, we’ll have a town swamped with annoyance and indifference, which can’t be very conducive to our happiness and productivity.
