THE Tuta Carriers St Cathryn’s Club Championship was played in near to perfect weather this weekend. Golfers on Saturday were met by a fairly strong breeze at first that calmed down later. Sunday was perfect golfing weather. To accommodate all golfers the committee allowed three golfers to play 36 holes on Sunday, due to family and work commitments they had on the Saturday.
If you speak to the senior golfers in the club you will be told that in the “grand old days” that is how club champs were played - 36 holes in one day. The rough on the 4th and 13th hole caught a few players and slowed the field down a few times prompting club captain Brent Barkhuizen to declare that he would sponsor a new rough mower.

Farmers’ Agri Care Monthly Mug was also played during the weekend and Liekie Steyn walked off with the Mug with an unbelievable nett 64 score.

Divisions we had for the day were A division, B division, C division, ladies and juniors, tee to pin members as well as St Cathryn’s home owners. We are proud to say we had players representing golfers in all the divisions.

A division: 1st Lawrence Savage Gross 169, Merwin Rabe Gross 171

B division: 1st Deon van Dyk Gross 159, Dieter Meyer Gross 170, Fanie van Wyk Gross 172

C division: 1st Jaryd Manser Gross 186, Niel Manser gross 191, Mike Harrison gross 192

Ladies division: Liekie Steyn Gross 179 (member take note, Liekie also beat all the players in the C division).

Junior division: Luyanda Daniel, tee to pin: Fanie Wyk, best nett: Liekie Steyn 135

Tuta Carriers St Cathryn’s Club Champion for 2016: Deon van Dyk.

What is notable in the results is that two of the Sunday players who played 36 holes ended up in the top scoring positions including the club champion Deon van Dyk, who recently became a father, and who had not played golf for the past four months. Pushing a golf trolley seems to have trained him well on how you push a baby pram.

Tuta Carriers was represented by Geoff Newlands, and he again committed his transport company to the club championship in 2017. On behalf of members and players, we thank Geoff for his support during the past 16 years in the Tuta Carriers Club Championship.

Judging by the gees out on the deck during prize giving it can be said that a great weekend was had by all. Members were also happy to see Cathy out and about again. Once again St Cathryn’s thanks members for making the effort to travel and spend the weekend with us.
