St Cathryn’s news

2018-06-27 06:03

THE St Cathryn’s match play tournament was played on Saturday, June 23, and Sunday June 24. The event started with a late withdrawal in the first round that left the gate wide open for the rest of the players.

Piet Nel took on Piet Coetzee, with the game going to the 16th hole before Piet Coetzee shook hands to take the game with a win of 3&2. Mike Harrison played Leonie Coetzee with Harrison proving his metal, ultimately beating Coetzee 7&5.

In the other draw, Fritz Volker played Dieter Meyer. Volker was no walk over however he found himself bested with a score 2&1.

Deon van Dyk did not play the first round, due to the withdrawal of Fanie van Wyk due to work commitments, and had a first round walk over.

The second round, on Saturday afternoon, saw Mike Harrison drawn against Meyer and Coetzee against Deon van Dyk. Van Dyk lost to Coetzee, by 3&2, and Meyer took 15 holes to beat Harrison.

From next year, a plate division will be part of the match play to give the first round losers another chance to have a golfing weekend.

Saturday night’s bring and braai bought all the remaining match players together with Duggie and Sandra Rheeder, who were on a visit to St Cathryn’s.

Discussions centred around the new stroking of certain holes, the “competitive edge” of other players, and tactical planning for the impromptu caddies for the Sunday. The carts option was also discussed as, at present, carts are only used in the first round. In the future, carts might possibly be used into the finals as most of the players are in the 60–plus age group. It will have to be taken into consideration.

Sunday morning Josh came to caddie for his dad Dieter Meyer and Duggie caddied for Piet Coetzee.

Harrison and van Dyk tee’d off first for the third and fourth position with van Dyk edging Harrison out on the 18th hole, even after Harrison led at halftime by four holes.

Ultimately the Meyer-Coetzee game finished on the 14th hole with Meyer being crowned victorious.

Congratulations go to Dieter Meyer, our 2018 Match play Champion.

During the holidays we will have our winter special — R 150 golf and cart for 18 holes — as long as the carts are available and not during competitions.
