ON Saturday 21 November the Anglican Diocese of Natal welcomed Bishop Dino Gabriel as the new Diocesan Bishop. Seven members of the St James congregation attended this auspicious event, including Reverend Peter Russell, three representatives from the parish youth group and church warden, Tony Dutton. The installation was held at Michaelhouse, Anglican Diocesan College of Natal, in Balgowan.

The installation was a joyous occasion with visiting bishops from the whole of southern Africa and the formal mass providing a counter-point to the hub-bub and excitement so apparent among the congregation.

Among the special guests of honour were Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba, Her Royal Highness Princess Thandi, and Councillor Thembeka Mchunu, First Lady of KZN. Archbishop Thabo Makgoba presided over the proceedings.

Bishop Dino was born in Italy and came to South Africa as a Catholic missionary priest.
He left the Catholic Church to marry and joined the Anglican Church, initially as a layman. Only later did he become an Anglican cleric, finally becoming the Bishop of Zululand, based in Eshowe, before being elected as Bishop of Natal in July this year
