THERE has been a close and special relationship between Hermannsburg School and Stella Cockburn for many years.

Stella, then Torlage, matriculated from the school and after obtaining her degree, and getting married, taught and worked in a variety of aspects of school life.

She served on the school’s management committee for close to 30 years, with her main focus being marketing and teaching Zulu.

At her farewell, acting principal, Lothar Witthöft, said: “If one is looking for the personification of caring and a real heart for children and fellow humans, then one need look no further than Stella Cockburn.

“A product of Hermannsburg of the 60’s and 70s, Stella’s remarkable fluency in English, Afrikaans, German and Zulu has made her an ambassador for our school from Zululand to Germany and many more places in-between, to everyone from toddlers (especially in the local créches) to dignitaries from other countries.

Stella’s passion for nature, our school’s nature club and eco-school drive is simply an extension of her caring disposition.

We will miss her smile, her optimism, her “never-give-up-ness” and her willingness to jump in and help whenever inkomo ihlanganisiwe (rescue is urgently needed). We look forward to Stella’s continued involvement in our school and community, albeit in different ways. In the meantime, Hamba kahle, mama wethu.”

Stella has decided to call it a day as she has never quite recovered from a serious car accident in 2014. She looks forward to serving the school and the community in various ways.
