ONE home robbery suspect was killed and two others arrested following a shootout with security officers and police in Greytown on Friday, October 26. According to information received, the three suspects gained entry to a home in Cooper Street and accosted a family. Head of Field Security in Greytown Sudash Maharaj said the suspects then assaulted two victims. “We received a call about the robbery in progress and responded. On arrival members were faced with armed suspects which resulted in a shootout. “At the scene, the public pointed out a suspect. When approached, he produced a firearm and shot towards the members of Field,” Maharaj said. The officers returned fire and injured the suspect. He was taken to hospital however he later died as a result of his injuries. “A few minutes later, the other two suspects were arrested at the scene,” Maharaj said. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident, saying: “Three suspects allegedly accosted a family at their home in Cooper Street and robbed them of their cellphones. Local security guards responded to the robbery, suspects fired at them and they returned fire. “A 37-year old suspect was shot and taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh where he died on arrival. The other two suspects, aged 37 and 39, were arrested and charged for robbery,” Zwane said. The suspects appeared at the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 29. Police are investigating cases of robbery and an inquest.
