WORLD Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4.

The day is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) which aims to reduce premature cancer deaths, and those due to non-communicable diseases, by 25% by 2025 through awareness initiatives such as World Cancer Day.

There is hope for cancer patients as currently there are just over 43 million people alive within five years of a cancer diagnosis.

CANSA encourages South Africans to improve their knowledge of cancer and to challenge unhelpful myths and stigma.

Individuals can lower cancer risk by exercising more; having good eating habits; being sun smart and staying away from sunbeds; getting vaccinated against HPV and Hepatitis B; quitting tobacco and alcohol; avoiding pollutants and chemicals such as asbestos, pesticides and BPA, amongst others; as well as knowing the signs and symptoms of cancer to enable early detection for successful treatment. Detailed information to assist in achieving these goals can be found at www.cansa.org.za

Make a personal commitment to lower your risk in one area of your life and share it with all your contacts.

You can begin by participating at the following events to get your personal health commitment off to a good start.

• The Gijima for CANSA, which will take place on February 4 at Snell Parade in Durban, which will commence at 7 am for registration.

• The Fit4Good events which will take place in May, but will launch on Expresso on February 4. For further information visit the CANSA website. — Supplied.
