A 46-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to life in the Greytown Regional Magistrate’s Court for the rape of a teenager in Kranskop on 22 July.

According to evidence, the 14-year-old girl was asleep on a bed in the kitchen, while the accused Sipho Manda and some of the teenager’s cousins were there drinking alcohol.
When the cousins left, the accused remained behind, attacked and raped the teenager. She screamed for help and her grandmother, who was in the house, rushed into the kitchen and saw the rape taking place.

The accused ran off, but was arrested that evening and pleaded guilty in court on 19 August.

Captain Keshni Budloo, unit commander Greytown FCS thanked the investigating officer Constable Thaba Ndabandaba and the Regional Court public prosecutor Andile Ngiba for securing the well deserved life sentence.

Captain Budloo said that this life sentence should send a clear message to the community that rape and crimes against women and children will not be tolerated and the penalties for such cases are severe.
