Teen tragically drowns at lake

2017-10-18 06:01

A TEENAGER tragically lost his life when he drowned in Lake Merthley while swimming with friends on Sunday afternoon.

A Grade 9 pupil at Greytown Secondary School, 17-year-old Ntokozo Mbambo’s family and friends were devastated and his fellow
pupils wept when they heard the sad news of the death of one of their popular classmates.

An eyewitness, who was fishing at the time, attempted to assist when Ntokozo disappeared in the water, but was unable to do so and contacted the Greytown charge office at about 3.20pm.

Not being able to locate the body in the water the Greytown police alerted the search and rescue team in
Pietermaritzburg and their divers found Ntokozo’s body at about 6pm.

At the time of going to press funeral arrangements had not been confirmed, but the service is expected to be held on Saturday.

His family live in Matimatolo.

Umvoti Municpality closed Lake Merthley to the public two years ago as the level of the water dropped drastically in the drought, however, access is easy from the wall side, with boundary fences stolen and the guardhouse vandalised.
