Teens plead guilty to Mondi murder

2017-06-14 06:02

TWO teenagers will be sentenced at the end of the month for the murder of 49-year-old Sarel Theron last July.
The two, Ntukhuko Msibe and Siphesihle Cele, last week pleaded guilty to charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances in the Pietermaritzburg High Court separately to Judge Jerome Mnguni and Judge Pete Koen, who will consider probation officer's reports prior to passing sentence.

Theron, who lived alone on the Mondi farm, Mistley Estates in Seven Oaks, was found beaten, stabbed and strangled in his home after a colleague became concerned when he did not report for work on Monday 4 July.

Both the accused stated they had been accompanied by a third person, who is still at large. They had gone to the house with the intention of robbery - no one was home so they had kicked the door open.
Theron then drove in and they pulled him out his car and into the house. There was a safe in the house which they could not open and Theron said he did not have the keys. They did not believe him so assaulted, punched and tied him up. While they were trying to get the safe open, the accused said Theron managed to reach out and grab the knife, which had been put on the table next to him.
They stated that the third (missing) attacker had disarmed Theron, stabbed him on his penis which caused Theron to fall to the ground and then began strangling him.

They fled the scene and were arrested in a major joint operation with police and security firms. Some of the victim's property was found on them.
Sentence will be passed on 28 June.
