Three local cops arrested on murder charges

2018-08-15 06:00

THREE KwaZulu-Natal police officers in key arms of the SA Police Service (SAPS) have been arrested for the alleged torture and murder of a man in police custody. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) announced on Monday they had arrested one police officer from the Muden detectives and two from Greytown Crime Intelligence for murder, defeating the ends of justice, and assault.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said that on August 2 the detective and Crime Intelligence officers had interrogated three people in connection with a murder case. During the incident, it is alleged that, “...the three suspects were detained, tortured and assaulted inside Muden cells until one of the suspects succumbed to his injuries and died”.

It is reported that they then dumped the body in nearby bushes.

Dlamini said the family of the deceased reported him missing at the same police station after he didn't return home.

Family members were told by the police that the deceased had been released, however they reported that he was missing to IPID.

A task team was formed to investigate the matter and the three officers were arrested last Sunday. The three suspects are due to appear in Greytown Magistrate's Court today.
