Tips to keep your children safe this holiday

2019-03-27 06:00

NOW that school holidays have arrived, make sure your children are safe while having fun.

“Many parents work through the school holidays, so children are looked after by a family member or domestic worker or simply stay at home by themselves. Whatever your situation is, children can have a great holiday while staying safe by following some simple advice from mom and dad,” says Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing & Communications Manager of Fidelity ADT.

Speaking on this, parent Kiara Singh said: “Because both my husband and I work, my child stays in daycare during the school holidays.

“While there are responsible adults present, I ensure that my child still knows about stranger danger as well as knowing emergency contact numbers.

“That being said, I also try to monitor my child’s Internet usage, especially with instances of that ‘Momo character’ appearing in children’s videos. It’s a scary age we are living in, we as parents need to constantly be vigilant.”

Local police also urged parents to be more hands on with their children. She offered these pointers:

• Alway keep the property locked;

• Teach your children how to use the panic button and alarm system;

• Have a list of emergency contacts on their phone or visible to them;

• Monitor all use of the Internet

• Never post any personal information online;

• Keep your privacy settings as high as possible;

• Don’t befriend people you don’t know.
