BEAUTIFUL, warm, winter weather greeted the Wembley College Sport Department for their High Performance Hockey Clinic this past weekend.

Kristen Paton and Lisa Deetlefs, two venerated South African hockey players, put pupils from Grade 1 to matric through their paces on the hockey field.

Paton is a 21-year-old chiropractic student who plays central midfield for South Africa. She has represented her country at U16, U18, U21 and senior level and currently has 10 caps for South Africa, having participated in the Commonwealth games in Australia and the World Cup in Chile in 2018.

The 30-year-old Deetlefs, Head of Hockey at Roedean School, has been a member of the South African Women’s hockey team for 12 years, having made her debut at 19. She currently holds 250 caps for her country, having competed in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Common Wealth Games and World Cup.

The hockey clinic was designed to help pupils and teachers focus on hockey skills development, fitness and game readiness. Three days of intensive, high performance coaching with the selection of South African and local coaches will have sharpened our pupils’ hockey skills. We look forward to seeing these skills in practice on the astro. — Supplied.
