MUMSY Gladys Mkhize, who died on August 28 at the age of 72, was born in Enhlalakahle.

She finished her high school education at the then Greytown Secondary School (now Buhlebuyeza High School), graduated as a teacher at Vryheid Teacher Training College and taught at various schools at Msinga, Ndwedwe and Umvoti and then worked at Sales House.

Mumsy was involved in many organisations in Greytown, including the Young Women's Christian Association, Enhlalakahle Child and Family Welfare, Greytown Rotary and the Committee for Land Restitution, turning her home into the hub of this very successful initiative which saw thousands of Enhlalakahle residents being compensated for their properties destroyed during the apartheid era.

A co-founder of Umvoti Aids Centre, Mumsy worked with dedication to see the centre become an internationally-recognised entity.

UAC Chairperson Joan Dutton stated: “On behalf of the Umvoti Aids Centre board, I would like to thank and honour you for all your dedication to the centre.

“Your work went beyond the usual realms of duty as you were the icon of our work at the Umvoti Aids Centre.”

A true socialite who endeared herself across the length and breadth of Umvoti, she was laid to rest last Saturday after a service attended by family and friend which was graced by the presence of the mayor of Umvoti and the Mayor of Umzinyathi.
