Triumph for Grade 11 Wembley pupils

2017-02-01 06:03

RUDYARD Kipling wrote a poem called, If in 1895. The poem is a piece of advice from a parent to a child. If only we could all follow these wise words, written almost a hundred years ago:

"If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same."

In Grade 11, we had many pupils who met with academic triumph in their 2016, AS exams. Ross Goble achieved 93% for mathematics and 89% for Afrikaans. Ross van Rooyen attained 89% for Afrikaans and Megan Meyer achieved 85% for Afrikaans.

The subject averages for some subjects in this form were 70% for Afrikaans, 63% for maths and 68% for accountancy. Not all pupils achieved these exceptionally high results, but take cognisance of the words in Kipling's poem, treat triumph and disaster just the same. Do not feel disappointed because if you put your mind to it you can achieve just about anything.

In order to achieve academic success, you need to establish a disciplined work ethic. Pupils who acquire high results will be motivated, interested and engaged in their work. They will adopt good homework habits every day. These patterns will begin with parents who are their child's first teacher. Try to set up good learning patterns at home. The price of success is hard work, dedication and the determination that whether we achieve or fail, we have tried our best.

Set your own goals at the beginning of a new year. Try to reach those goals by the end of that year. Do not fixate on what anyone else is achieving. If you want to achieve remember as Kipling said at the end of his poem, "yours is the earth and everything that is in it".
