“POLICE should increase their visibility along the Greytown Taxi Rank to curb the killings.”

These are the words of the Ward 9 councillor, Wilson Khoza, following the killing of two men aged 35 and 40 in Greytown last Friday.

It is alleged that the two men were among a group of people playing ‘dice games’ near the taxi rank when an unknown man opened fire on them.

According to sources, the man alighted from his vehicle and fired shots towards the crowd.

The two men sustained gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

“Last year we even held a prayer for peace and safety after many killings occurred in Greytown. We invited the Greytown SAPS, South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and leaders from interfaith groups to address the matter.

“We therefore urge the police to increase their patrols [in] the spot where these killings are taking place. We are optimistic that the police will make arrests.

The taxi rank is also being used by commuters; therefore, it is crucial to ensure that they are safe. We therefore urge the police to speed up the investigation and arrest the culprits,” Khoza said.

When the Greytown Gazette visited the taxi rank on Monday morning, a group of men were seen playing the ‘dice game’.

One of the street vendors who wanted to remain anonymous told the Gazette that commuters and other street vendors are still in shock.

“This is not the first incident to happen at the taxi rank.”

However, Santaco spokesperson Jeffrey Ngobese said the incident was not related to taxi violence.

“We have heard about the shooting and it is not related to taxi violence because there’s no conflict that we know off at the moment.

I would like to assure passengers that the taxi rank is safe. The incident is not taxi related,” he said.

According to sources at the taxi rank, the group of men gather at the spot near the rank and play the ‘dice game’.

It is unclear if the suspect who shot the two men had also been part of the game.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “Charges of murder are being investigated by Greytown SAPS. It is alleged on March 6 at 7.55pm, two men aged 35 and 40 were at a taxi rank in Greytown when they were shot at by an unknown suspect. They sustained gunshot wounds to the head and chest. They were both declared dead at the scene. The matter is still under investigation.”
