Two rapists receive life

2017-03-15 06:02

SENDING out the message loud and clear, two life sentences were handed down by the Greytown Regional Court last week on two men found guilty of rape.

In the first case Spamandla Bhengu was found guilty of raping an 11-year-girl at a family funeral in the Kranskop area in 2015. The young girl was too frightened to report the rape, but was then taken ill as a result. Bhengu, who was 19 at the time, was arrested. He was handed down a life sentence and his name entered on the sexual offenders register.

The second life sentence was handed down to 28-year-old Samkelo Nzuza for raping an eight-year-old girl in 2014 in Maimatolo and threatening to kill her if she reported the attack. The young child was on her way home from school with her friends, when Nzuza, who she knew, asked her to buy him airtime. He then dragged into the bushes and attacked her, and her friends fled the scene. The rapist was identified by witnesses working with the police, and DNA samples proved positive.

Seven years ago in Kranskop, a 14-year-old boy raped a six-year-old girl – he was caught in the act. In view of his age at the town the Greytown Regional Court sentenced him to five years, which was wholly suspended for five years.

A 14-year-old school girl on her way home in the Msinga area was offered a lift bt two men. The driver, however, did not drop her off but took her to the Khanyile homestead where the passenger, Thando Khanyiule, raped her. She managed to escape and fled home.

Khanyile was traced and arrested. He was sentenced to 10 years by the Greytown Regional Court.
