Two shot dead in armed robbery

TWO members of a gang of 17 armed robbers were shot dead in a raid at a butchery in Kranskop on Saturday afternoon.

The attackers entered the shop at closing time, 5.30 pm, armed with 9mm and 7.65 pistols when they took over the shop and demanded money.

The owner took two of the suspects to the strong-room where he said there was money.

The owner managed to cock his 9mm pistol and, in an exchange of fire, shot two of the robbers.

An unlicensed 9mm and a 7.65 pistol were recovered from the two dead men.

A customer was also shot in the exchange of fire and is recovering in hospital.

More than 50 doppies were found in and around the building.

The rest of the gang fled in two getaway vehicles with an undisclosed amount of cash.

KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed that, during the gunfire exchange, two suspects were fatally wounded.

“Two unlicensed firearms were recovered from the dead suspects. Other suspects in the shop managed to take an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in their two getaway vehicles,” Zwane said.

“A case of armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was opened at Kranskop police station for further investigation. An inquest docket was also opened regarding the death of the two suspects,” said Zwane.

The two dead men had not been identified at the time of going to press.

A major manhunt is underway, conducted by Kranskop and neighbouring police, for the remaining members of the gang.
