THE uMshwathi Municipality commemorated Women's Month with a gathering at the end of August at Mploweni, attended by a large number of women.

uMshawati Mayor, Siphindile Zondi Mbele encouraged women to form co-operatives - the municipality offers positive support for such initiatives.
She expressed her concern that each year during Women's Month encouragement was given to women to develop their own income-generating businesses, but very few took advantage during the year of the support offered by uMshwathi to develop their business, and there was very limited positive outcome.

The mayor urged women to take action: "You do have skills and potential. We have tried to support you with sewing machines to produce more products, [however] the market is not as good as we expected. Why?

“We have many pupils who need uniforms. At mayoral cups we buy tracksuits from town, the Department of Correctional Services buys its uniforms in town. What prohibits us from manufacturing these uniforms and supplying them to boost the market".
